SA Rugby on Tuesday announced the appointment of dynamic Free State Cheetahs flank Kabamba Floors as Springbok Sevens captain for the first two tournaments in the International Rugby Board Sevens Series. Floors will lead South Africa in the opening tournament on December 1 and 2 in Dubai and a week later on home soil in George.

A man died from injuries sustained when he was beaten by outraged Motherwell residents after he raped a five-year-old girl, Port Elizabeth police said on Tuesday. Police said the child’s mother had told elders in the community about the rape, which took place on Saturday.

A nuclear reactor at Koeberg in Cape Town was restored on Tuesday after it automatically shut down on Sunday night, Eskom said. ”The power level will be increased during the course of today [Tuesday] and the unit is expected to be back to the previous power level of 84% on Wednesday morning,” said a spokesperson.

Operations at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg returned to normal following a jet-fuel leak on Tuesday, the Airports Company South Africa said. South African Airways flights were delayed by about two hours, a spokesperson said, and Nationwide flights by about 30 minutes.

An increase in the business confidence index (BCI) for October was probably a temporary spike and not the start of a renewed surge in confidence, the South African Chamber of Business (Sacob) said on Monday. The increase to 99,5 in October came after a declining trend between May and September.

Both President Thabo Mbeki and former president FW de Klerk will attend PW Botha’s funeral on Wednesday. Botha, who was head of the government from 1978 to 1989, died peacefully at his Wildnerness home last week, aged 90. The Presidency said Mbeki had emphasised the need for a ”balanced” appraisal of Botha’s life.

More than 250 people in Port Elizabeth have been diagnosed with multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, media reports said on Tuesday. It said some of them were possibly living with the deadly extreme drug resistant (XDR) TB. At least 18 people in Nelson Mandela Bay metro had already died from multi-drug-resistant (MDR) TB, but officials would not confirm that the cause of death may have been XDR TB.

GaRankuwa taxi boss Oupa ”Mzayoni” Moremi has been jailed for 18 years for murder, the Pretoria News reported on Tuesday. According to the newspaper’s website, the Mmabatho Circuit Court imposed sentences of 48 years each on Moremi and two of his drivers, Colleth and Clement Ledingwane for crimes including two murders and a kidnapping.

An automated teller machine (ATM) at a petrol station in Pimville was badly damaged after dynamite was used to blow it open on Monday morning, Soweto police said.
