UNION, SOUTH DEEP END STRIKE

SOUTH Africa’s South Deep mine and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have reached an agreement to end a crippling strike at one of the country’s biggest gold mines. About 2 800 members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) downed tools at the mine on Thursday in a dispute over working arrangements. South Deep, a 50-50 joint venture between Canada’s Placer Dome Inc and South African producer Western Areas Ltd, employs around 5 200 people. The strike severely affected production at the mine, but work on an expansion project has continued. – Reuters
