FOREIGN direct investment (FDI) into South Africa amounted to R700m during the third quarter, the same level as in the second quarter, the central bank said in its quarterly bulletin. This was much lower than the R4.9bn of FDI which came into the country during the first quarter and compares with R9.1bn during the whole of 1999, the bulletin showed. Outward portfolio investment by South African residents rose to R7.0bn during the third quarter from R4.3bn in the second. – Reuters
