The Mail & Guardian continues its award-winning ways. Last week the paper won a top-ranking award in the Frewin/ McCall/Mervis competition for newspaper design and production.
The M&G scooped top prize in the Mervis category, which is named after renowned past editor Joel Mervis and has been running for eight years. The category is open to all urban weekly newspapers.
The Mervis competition evaluates typography and layout, graphics and pictures, printing, production and advertisements.
”It’s a great achievement for the M&G’s sub-editors, who have worked hard over the past two years to refine the design,” said M&G managing editor Tracy Steward.
”It shows that the newspaper is in tune with cutting-edge international trends.”
Beeld won the Frewin section (open to all dailies), while Business Day took first prize in the McCall section (open to dailies with a circulation of less than 50 000).
A total of 17 dailies and 18 weeklies this year entered the competition, which is organised by the Newspaper Association of South Africa.
In another development, Trevor Ncube, CEO of M&G Media, has been elected chairperson of the Newspaper Association of South Africa, as well as president of Print Media South Africa.
”I feel honoured by the confidence shown in me by my colleagues in the industry,” Ncube said.
”I look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to advancing the interests of our industry and the broader community.” He takes over from Connie Molusi, whose two-year term expired this year.
