Gauteng goes wireless

Gauteng province has become the first province to switch on to Sentech’s broadband wireless (BBW) high-speed, no-limit internet access via regulated high-powered radio frequency, Sentech announced on Friday.

Sentech is the state-owned but commercially run TV and radio signal distributor and is licensed to carry the traffic for local and international telecommunications operators, including audio, data and video.

Sentech launched its affordable BBW service, also known as MyWireless, in Gauteng on January 19. Durban will be MyWireless-enabled on February 19 while Cape Town switches on on March 19.

MyWireless, Sentech said, has the capacity to drive down user costs while driving up user expectations. Sentech’s internet protocol technology makes true wireless connectivity possible for the first time in South Africa. This service creates an always-on internet environment without putting a limit on the volume of data a user can send and receive.

Sentech pointed out that internet users previously relied on fixed telephone lines, WiFi or general packet radio services — that use cellular telephony — which can be expensive.

In contrast, MyWireless uses high-powered radio networks. High-site transmitters send out signals, which are converted by a modem supplied by Sentech. The modem can be attached to virtually any desktop or notebook computer. Software is self-installable via compact disk.

“All terminology, terms and conditions are written in layman’s language to help first-time users,” Sentech added.

“MyWireless has the potential to extend the market for personal internet access and e-mail to sections of the population that could not previously afford internet access,” said Sentech group executive Marcel Raath.

Currently, MyWireless is offered by Sentech directly but in the future it will also be available via a network of designated “retail partners” tasked with product distribution. Its reception is limited to a 5,7km radius of a high site in built-up areas.

“The launch of MyWireless makes it more vital than ever that users check their options before signing or renewing internet contracts. MyWireless creates a choice of price and technology. Gauteng consumers have first choice. They should use it,” Raath said. — I-Net Bridge
