I take this opportunity to protect my integrity and good name, in response to your article ”MTN deal still on ice” (July 1). While I believe in a free press, I understand such to come with great responsibility.
In this instance I am extremely disappointed by the failure on the part of the Mail & Guardian to apply the high standards of vigorous journalism that it purports to espouse.
Had the M&G applied the high standards of vigorous journalism it espouses, the following facts would have come to the fore in the article.
- I played no role, either directly or indirectly, in the selection of the successful bidder to acquire the Transnet shares in MTN. This process was managed by the Department of Public Enterprises;
- My departure from Transnet had nothing to do with the MTN share sale, but the reasons therefore remain confidential owing to covenants in a separation agreement entered into between myself and Transnet;
- Africa Vanguard Capital, a company in which I have an interest, has no interest in Umthunzi Consortium nor any trust in the Consortium. I am also not a beneficiary of the Consortium in any manner;
- The affidavit confirming the absence of interest on my part in the consortium was deposed at my own initiative without any undue pressure from Transnet or anyone.
The reference to me as ”former Transnet poster woman” is a cheap shot that is not only insulting but chauvinistic to the core. I have been a chartered accountant for more than a decade and have held numerous senior positions in other companies prior to my position as CFO of Transnet. I assume these appointments were made entirely on the basis of my competencies and not my gender or looks. I regard the article as an unwarranted attack on my integrity and good name. I am a strong proponent of good corporate governance and have always conducted myself in accordance with that believe, hence the respect I command among my colleagues and peers. I urge you and your reporters to adhere to responsible journalism for the good of the nation.
