The African National Congress has condemned the killing of two police officers in Langa, Cape Town, on Wednesday, and called on anyone with information to come forward so that justice can be done.
”We hope the perpetrators of this crime will be brought to book and be removed from society,” ANC provincial secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha said on Thursday.
Sergeant Luvuyo Myanda and Constable Zuko Golimpi were shot dead when attending to a false complaint of assault at a house in Langa on Wednesday night.
Superintendent Billy Jones said the 37-year-old sergeant and 32-year-old constable were returning to their car when they were confronted by a group of men on Sigcawu Street.
”The men fired shots at the officers and both of them sustained bullet wounds to the head,” Jones said.
The police officers were then robbed of their service pistols.
Jones said the constable died at the scene and the sergeant died shortly after his arrival at hospital.
The ANC expressed its condolences ”to the families and colleagues of these heroes who lost their lives in this cruel and horrific way”.
”Up to date and including last night’s incident, four police officers have been killed in the Western Cape since the start of the year. Three were murdered while on duty,” Skwatsha said.
No arrests have been made in Wednesday’s killings, and police suspect robbery as the motive of the attack, Jones said.
