Report: Thieves break into Jo’burg police station

Thieves have broken into the Johannesburg Central police station where they partied on liquor from the officer’s canteen and raided a commissioner’s office, stealing cellphones, Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The burglars slipped through the charge office unnoticed, also making their way unseen past a private security guard after the close of business on Friday.

Not even electronic security doors at the entrance to the seventh floor office of Commissioner Simon Mpembe could keep them out.

They stole sweets from his secretary’s office and set the carpet alight. They took ornamental spoons from Mpembe’s office and also made a fire on its floor.

The thieves went on to take R3 000-worth of cigarettes from the officers’ canteen and helped themselves to brandy, whisky and rum.

Although police liaison officer Sergeant Sanku Tsunke confirmed the incident to Beeld, he would not provide more details. — Sapa
