Crime victims to march on govt offices

Victims in the Republic of South Africa (Virsa) will lead a march on Saturday to government offices around the country to demand a crime-free and corruption-free country.

”We are giving ordinary people an opportunity to voice out their opinions about the government’s negative attitude towards crime,” Virsa spokesperson Steph Hartung said on Wednesday.

The protest marches will be held in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, where the organisation will hand over a memorandum to government representatives.

”Millions of South Africans are sick and tired of crime and the government needs to change its relaxed attitude towards crime and criminals,” said Hartung.

She invited all citizens who felt they were victims of crime, corrupt officials and an ”ignorant government” to join in the ”march for justice”.

The organisation is also collecting signatures in the three cities for a petition that will be handed over to the United Nations once it manages to collect three million signatures.

”We have already collected more than 80 000 and we are aiming at three million signatures within three weeks.

”Once we collect the three million, we will hand the petition over to the UN because our government does not seem to care,” said Hartung.

In Johannesburg the march will start at 10am from the Library Gardens to Mayor Amos Masondo’s office in Braamfontein. — Sapa
