South African sports journalist dies in car crash

An award-winning sports reporter for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been killed in a car accident, officials said on Sunday.

The public broadcaster reported that veteran journalist Maseru Koaho died in a car crash in Potchefstroom, west of Johannesburg, on Saturday night.

The South African 2010 Fifa World Cup organising committee expressed shock over Koaho’s death.

“To receive the news of Maseru’s death is extremely shocking. It is a major loss,” the local organising committee chief executive, Danny Jordaan, said in a statement.

“Maseru has been a very important part of every aspect of the coverage of South Africa’s bidding and hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. His enthusiasm for the coverage of the tournament was infectious. We would like to extend our most sincere condolences to his family and to everyone at the SABC,” Jordaan added.

Eddie Funde, the SABC board chairperson, said the public broadcaster had suffered a great loss. – AFP
