Jo’burg photography picks: July 15 2011

A young photographer’s debut show is on at the Rooke Gallery, and photographers are invited to donate their art for a cause.

? Photographer Frank Marshall explores the bizarre heavy metal subculture that has emerged in sub-Saharan Africa in his exhibition, Renegades, at the Rooke Gallery in Newtown. Marshall portrays characters scowling proudly in studded leather cowboy hats and densely studded jackets, placed against the backdrop of rural Botswana.

Rooke Gallery, 37 Quinn Street, Newtown, Jo’burg, until August 31. The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday, 10am to 5.30pm and on Saturday from 9am to 12pm. Visit  www.rookegallery.com.

? Photos For Hope, South Africa’s largest photography exhibition, opens doors for amateur photographers to donate their material for purchase at Melrose Arch this weekend. The photographs are all A4 prints that can be bought for R100 each and all proceeds go towards the Sunflower Fund, which raises money for those affected by blood diseases such as leukemia. A variety of bands will entertain, including Lonehill Estate and Isochronous.

The Piazza, Melrose Arch, Melrose, Jo’burg, on July 16. The exhibition starts at 9am and runs until 7pm. Visit www.sunflowerfund.org.za.
