Jo’burg art pick: April 6 2012

Painter Deborah Poynton’s atmospheric studies of nudes and landscapes portray people and plants as inanimate objects existing only for the sake of the artist and her work.

There is something both reverential and irreverent about her method and, when looked at collectively, her cast of characters land up looking, almost, like animal specimens on display. The new exhibition is titled Land of Cockaigne. It comprises 10 large new and recent paintings and its title refers to the medieval myth of a land of plenty.

Stevenson Johannesburg, 62 Juta Street, Braamfontein, until May 18.
